You can vote before Election Day by submitting an absentee ballot application to your city or township clerk. Absentee ballots must be returned to your clerk's office or dropbox by 8:00 p.m. on Election Day. (Late ballots will not be counted except for ballots from military and overseas voters.) New this year: You can bring your absentee ballot to your community's early voting site and have it tabulated there!
Some communities will hold elections on May 7 to allow voters to consider millage proposals. A full list of proposals is available here. Absentee ballots will be available on March 28 and must be returned by Election Day, Tuesday, May 7. State law does not require early voting for these elections.
There will be three sections of the ballot: Partisan, non-partisan, and proposals.
Partisan section
Voters will choose the Democratic and Republican nominees for the following offices. Voters may vote in either the Democratic or Republican column, but cannot vote in both.
Non-Partisan Section
If three or more candidates for the following offices file, they will appear in the Non-Partisan Section of the ballot, with the top two candidates running again in the fall:
Proposals Section
Kent County voters will also vote on whether to extend the early childhood millage. The millage is a property tax of .25 mills, or 25 cents for every $1,000 of taxable income. For example, if your home has a taxable value of $100,000, the Early Childhood Millage tax is $25 per year. Estimate your property taxes using this website.
Other proposals might also appear on the ballot. The deadline for communities to add proposals to the August ballot is May 14.
While a voter may only vote one of the partisan columns (Democratic or Republican), all voters may vote in the non-partisan and proposal sections of the ballot.
